Nigerian Music - PhilFlow – Artist – Profile
BACKGROUND
No matter what has been supplied, a hustler is only as good as his word. Motivated rapper “PhilFlow” a.k.a. “Philly da Kid With Tha Best Verse” is geared up to redefine what’s possible with hip hop music in Naija and he’s repping Lekki, Lagos to the fullest. This kid started off most unusually as he did 12 months in his momma’s belly and when he finally was delivered, unlike most babies, not a drop of tears was seen until the doctor whooped his behind. Philip Obozuwa was born in Benin City and is from Estako in Edo State, Nigeria. He comes from a close knit family with strong parents who shaped him into the person that he is today. Every mothers day his mother would tell him and his siblings stories about their childhood. Some experiences they did not know or remember because they were much younger. Some of them were mistakes they made as kids while others related to his parents experiences while growing up. Even now, she does this and it helped PhilFlow to appreciate his mother and all the mothers in this world.
PhilFlow grew up in some of the craziest and most notorious places in Nigeria including Warri, Benin and Lagos. Each environment in turn shaped his growing years. While some parents tell their kids that after their university education they will have to go out and hustle to make a life for themselves, PhilFlow arrived at that stage right after his secondary school education. In his words, “Growing up was a great experience because you know where you are given the opportunity to choose between good and evil. Some kids look at this as being free but I saw it as the chance to make my own decisions and be ready for the consequences.” Putting food on the table has had PhilFlow on his grind since he was a teen. Working as a marine officer was one of the few hustles he had managed to hook up in his teen years. Going to the high seas to source for petroleum products was a great experience for the kid, though unfortunately he got involved in an operation that led to him been locked up and taken to court in 2003. He was later vindicated in court and “from grace to grass” he headed “back to grace”.
PhilFlow is the third child amongst five kids. He was in the church choir with his mother where he played the “Turogo”, a traditional instrument similar to a guitar. He played football for his school team and participated in many football competitions both inside and outside of school including 4 Principal Cups. PhilFlow was also in the Drama Group and Music club. “I had this very small cassette player and I recall that after school I would go straight into my room and record myself as I rapped and tapped on tables for the beat. I especially liked lyrics from folks like 2Pac, Bone Thugs, Eminem, Heavy D and a lot more.” Every kid has dreams and PhilFlow’s was definitely connected to the TV screen. “I lived with it and through it. I have got much love and respect for the streets because the streets kept me on point.”
CAREER
The song “Freaky Things” is one of the strongest songs that I have recorded so far. It is my first party joint and the collabo with General Pype is so sick “that it’s still in the hospital at the moment … lol”). The concept for “Freaky Things” started when I was young with this very beautiful girl. I broke all laws and principles for her. I could even have killed for her because I liked her that much. I tripled my hustle just to make her feel she had the world under control so at a very young age I was taking up assignments that grown ups didn’t want to go near. I recall once on my mother’s birthday, I couldn’t get her anything because i had spent all my money taking my girl out. Crazy as this may sound, it is my personal experience and one of the concepts behind the song. Another concept for the song comes from a guy I knew who only spends and pops bottles in the club when he sees a very beautiful girl, the kind of girl who can take a man’s breath away and then give it back like she was a Goddess. So the song starts from the club and from there building the whole story was the next move because the joint is all about the pretty girls, all the way from their head to their toes, and even to their feelings inside. Initially I was having trouble with getting the chorus recorded so this took some months. We actually recorded the two version of the hook by two different dudes (both of them really good) and then mixed and mastered. At first when we took it out to the clubs to see if people liked it but hook still wasn’t quite right. My home boy “Black Chinese” suggested the hook would “sound right” with had some “Jamo”(Jamaican) flavour and that’s how my guy, Pype, came into the picture. Since we are all Lekki artists, Pype came over the studio listened to the joint and right there he recorded, spicing up the hook and dropping 8 bars.

I totally agree with your positive vibes of Rap. We need more rappers to teach the youth about positive things.
