Royal Dutch Shell resumed operations at its Soku gas plant in Nigeria last week, a company official said yesterday, nearly a year after it was forced to shut down because of attacks on its pipelines. “We started production on the 15th of October and production is ramping up, but we don’t divulge current production figures,” said spokesman Tony Okonedo in Nigeria. He added a force majeure on LNG shipments remained in place.

The return of Nigeria’s key feeder gas plant has allowed Nigeria LNG Limited, which supplies 10% of the world’s liquefied natural gas, to also boost production, an industry source said. The firm had cut operations to around 50% of capacity while Soku was shut down. LNG is gas cooled to liquid form and shipped in special tankers to markets in the developed world, particularly Europe and the United States, where it can be used for power generation or for making chemicals.

Nigeria LNG, which exports 22 million tonnes per year of compressed gas, is controlled by a group of Western companies including Shell, Total and Eni unit Agip. State-run NNPC owns 49%.
