Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Ola Oresanya has disclosed that the Olusosun Waste to Power project billed to take off last year failed because the contractor handling it could not deliver the needed equipment.
Addressing a joint press conference with Commissioners for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele and that of the Health, Dr. Jide Idris and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, Oresanya stated that the contractor was affected by the global economic crisis.
He said LAWMA was tidying up refuse collection in all parts of the state, and that the project is still on course, just as he reemphasised the agency’s readiness to generate gas from the waste to power electricity for Nigerians.
Oresanya however, assured that the state will come out with something laudable on the project before the end of this year.
On denial of medical attention for LAWMA officials hit by vehicles, Idris explained that the development has brought to the fore the need to remind all public servants in the state that they were entitled to free health services in all public hospitals, stating that the services were available 24 hours daily.
The medical directors will be held responsible in any public hospitals where the state public servants are denied access to free medical services. Both LAWMA and LASTMA officers are public servants of Lagos State and entitled to the free medical services. Rejection of public servants in the state hospitals will no longer be entertained because there is a special provision for them,” he said.
He also said victims of accidents brought to the hospitals were entitled to free treatment in the first 24 hours.
On clashes between LAWMA and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Opeifa directed that henceforth all faulty LAWMA trucks found on the roads should be towed without any fee to the closest LAWMA office, adding that such vehicles must be properly documented by the senior officer on duty.
