Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) has urged Federal Government to revive the abandoned Oji River Thermal Power station in Enugu State.

While frowning at the abysmal failure of the Federal Government to ensure steady electricity supply in the country in spite of its promises, ECCIMA stated that in efforts to boost power supply, it hopes that the Oji River station could be revisited and rebuilt.

Presenting an address at the 36th Annual General Meeting of the chamber in Enugu, the outgoing ECCIMA President, Pastor Olisaemeka Jideonwo, said if the Thermal Station in Oji River had worked in the past, it could still work today if obsolete technologies are updated.

Jideonwo, who noted that power is key to industrial development, said the station could still serve as a source of power generation as its base source line, coal, is still very much in abundant qualities.

He said: “In our efforts to boost power generation in the country, we do hope that Oji River Thermal Station could be revisited and rebuilt.

“We therefore once more call on the government of the South East states to make effort to establish independent power plants to boost power supply in the area. And Oji River remains a viable option, which should equally receive the attention of the Federal Government.”
